Helen has been a member of the House of Lords since 2010, previously she was British High Commissioner to Australia, and prior to that, a Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister in the Government of Sir Tony Blair, serving as Secretary of State for Scotland, among other ministerial appointments , she was Energy Minister, Europe Minister and Economic Secretary to the Treasury.
An economist by training, she serves on the Economic Affairs Committee of the Lords. She is Chair of Annington Ltd as well as serving as a trustee of various charities.
